1. Introduction to Tu Ky Pagoda
1.1. Location
Tu Ky Pagoda, located at 8 Ngoc Hoi Street, Hoang Mai District, is a renowned site among the many pagodas in Hanoi. As one of Hanoi’s leading centers for Buddhist revival, this pagoda frequently hosts meditation retreats and serves as a major Buddhist library in Northern Vietnam. It boasts an extensive collection of books, audiovisual materials, and other resources.
In addition to its religious and educational functions, Tu Ky Pagoda offers complimentary classes in foreign languages, calligraphy, and martial arts. Recognized for its significance, the pagoda was officially designated a national heritage site in 1995.
1.2. History
According to historical records at Tu Ky Pagoda, including a stele from the reign of King Chinh Hoa (1689) and a bronze bell from the reign of King Thieu Tri (1841), it was established during the Le Dynasty and underwent a significant restoration during the Nguyen Dynasty.
Before August 1945, Tu Ky Pagoda in Hanoi was an important base for revolutionary forces, with its lotus pond area serving as a hideout for soldiers. In 1946, the pagoda was destroyed as part of scorched earth efforts against the French.
Later, the pagoda was rebuilt to serve the spiritual needs of the community. The structures in the pagoda have all been extensively renovated to reflect the traditional architectural characteristics, preserving their original appearance.
2. Inside Tu Ky Pagoda
Tu Ky Pagoda not only serves as a place of worship but also as a showcase of traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship. Exploring the interior of the pagoda reveals a wealth of beauty and a collection of religious treasures.
2.1. Architecture
Tu Ky Pagoda features a large, serene space with its architectural structures organized in a deep layout, including a triple-arched gate, a front hall, an upper sanctuary, two stele houses, two side houses, a Buddha tower, and a Mother Goddess worship hall.
The triple-arched gate is designed with two levels. The lower level is the three arched entrances and the upper level is a four-tiered roof. Beyond the gate is a courtyard. On either side are two stele houses built in the style of pavilions. The front hall has layered roofs and consists of two stories. The upper sanctuary has three compartments.
The Mother Goddess worship hall consists of five front compartments and two rear compartments, built with enclosed walls. The right side features reliefs with statues of deities. Inside the main hall are statues of the Five Lords, with an altar dedicated to the Three Holy Mothers and General Tran Hung Dao.
2.2. Artifacts
Due to its destruction, Tu Ky Pagoda now retains only a few valuable artifacts. These include a large bronze bell inscribed with the four characters “Linh Tien tu chung,” cast in 1841, and three ancient steles dating from 1687, 1841, and 1924. Previously, the pagoda also had a stone incense burner made in 1666, which has been moved to the National Museum of History.
