Thu Thiem Tunnel: A key engineering landmark in Vietnam

29/06/2025 2.343

Thu Thiem Tunnel, one of Ho Chi Minh City’s vital traffic links, stands as both an iconic engineering landmark and a favorite hangout spot for locals and travelers alike. With breezy river views, golden sunsets, vibrant street food, and relaxed picnic spots, this lively riverside hub has something for everyone.

1. What is Thu Thiem Tunnel famous for?

Thu Thiem Tunnel is a remarkable architectural landmark located beneath the Saigon River. It is a part of the East-West Avenue, connecting District 1 with Thu Thiem New Urban Area in Thu Duc City (formerly District 2). After 7 years of construction, the tunnel officially opened to traffic in November 2011.

Thu Thiem Tunnel

1.1. Record-breaking infrastructure

As the first river-crossing tunnel in Vietnam and the largest and most modern river-crossing tunnel in Southeast Asia, the tunnel has a total length of 1,490 meters. It consists of three main sections: the entrance tunnel on the central Ho Chi Minh City side (585 meters), the entrance tunnel on the Thu Thiem side (535 meters), and the submerged tunnel, which comprises four segments with a combined length of 370 meters.

The tunnel measures over 33 meters in width and nearly 9 meters in height. The tunnel features two directions, each with three lanes: two for cars and one for motorbikes. With a cross-section width of 33.3 meters, the tunnel includes two emergency exits and is designed to accommodate six lanes of traffic.

1.2. Iconic urban development

As a vital route in eastern Saigon, Thu Thiem Tunnel is designed to accommodate up to 45,000 cars and 15,000 motorbikes daily. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technical systems, including ventilation, water pumping, dehumidification, lighting, communication alarms, fire prevention, and automated sensors to monitor noise, humidity, and dust levels.

Beyond connecting District 2 with District 1, it also links nearby areas such as District 4, District 7, and Binh Thanh District, significantly reducing travel time across the city. In the evenings, locals often gather near the tunnel to watch the sunset, enjoy picnics, and spend time with loved ones.

2. How to get to Thu Thiem Tunnel?

To reach Thu Thiem Tunnel’s rooftop area, visitors can choose motorbikes, cars, or taxis. A convenient and eco-friendly option is Xanh SM, which offers electric vehicles and app-based booking for a smooth and sustainable ride.

From District 1, follow Vo Van Kiet Street toward the tunnel. After exiting the tunnel, make the first left (looping back toward District 1), then take the innermost road to arrive at the riverside park.

From District 2, drive along Mai Chi Tho Street. As you approach the tunnel entrance, stay in the inner lane without entering the tunnel. You’ll reach the park easily.
