Huyen Khong Cave sits atop Thuy Son, the highest peak among the five Marble Mountains in Da Nang. You will find it in Ngu Hanh Son Ward (formerly Hoa Hai Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District), about 8 kilometers southeast of the city center. The cave lies on Thuong Thai summit, a quiet spot that draws visitors looking for both spiritual depth and natural beauty. It opens daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

1.2. Historical story

Huyen Khong Cave history reveals a legacy of resistance and courage. During the resistance against French colonial rule, it was a secret base for local leaders and guerrilla fighters. The cave offered protection and a strategic vantage point in the rugged terrain.

During the Second Indochina War, American forces turned the cave into a commando training ground. It also became a military outpost for the puppet regime. In 1968, the liberation army launched a major assault, driving them out.

After the battle, the cave became a field hospital and shelter for wounded soldiers. It witnessed acts of bravery, especially from Phan Hiep, a commander from Hoa Quy. On August 23, 1968, he led an assault remembered as one of the area’s most heroic moments. He was later honored as a Hero of the People's Armed Forces.

Today, the cave preserves these stories in its quiet stone walls.

2. Top things to explore on your visit to Huyen Khong Cave

2.1. Open-air cave structure

Huyen Khong Cave is famous for its open design and natural light. Shaped like an upside-down bell, the cave has five skylights that let sunlight pour in. On sunny days, the air inside stays cool and fresh, like natural air-conditioning. This ventilation sets it apart from enclosed caves elsewhere in Vietnam. If you visit at midday, you will catch sunlight filtering through the roof, creating a peaceful, almost spiritual glow across the stone walls.

2.2. Sacred statues

Huyen Khong Cave holds deep spiritual meaning. As you step down into the chamber, you will see statues of Good and Evil flanking the entrance. These figures remind visitors to choose compassion and mindfulness. At the highest point, you can see a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, crafted in 1960 by the famous artisan Nguyen Chat. To the left, you will find shrines to Lady Ngoc Phi, where people pray for wealth, and Lady Loi Phi, where visitors seek blessings for health and peace.

2.3. Trang Nghiem Tu Shrine

Tucked to the right side of the cave, Trang Nghiem Tu Shrine dates back to 1825. This shrine has three chambers, each with its own focus. The central chamber honors Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. On the left are statues of Guan Yu, Guan Ping, and Zhou Cang, symbolizing virtue, wisdom, and loyalty. The right chamber is especially popular among couples. Here, people pray to the matchmakers Ong To and Ba Nguyet, hoping for a blessed relationship.

2.4. Natural carvings & historical imprints

As you explore the cave walls, you will notice unusual rock formations that spark the imagination. Some resemble the profile of an old man, a stork with a long beak, or a pair of elephants with trunks hanging down. These shapes formed naturally over time, adding to the cave’s mystical atmosphere. You will also find Han script inscriptions carved by kings, scholars, and poets. Most are poems, offering a glimpse into the cave’s historical depth.
