2. History of Hai Van Gate

The history of Hai Van Gate is deeply intertwined with the establishment of the Nguyen Dynasty and Vietnam’s resistance against French and American colonial forces.

  • February 1826: King Minh Mang commissioned the construction of Hai Van Gate. The structure was fortified with artillery and garrisoned troops, serving as a critical defensive outpost protecting the southern approach to Hue.
  • 1858: French forces launched an assault on Da Nang with the intent to march on Hue. However, the strategic Hai Van Gate thwarted their efforts.
  • Late 1946: The French army transformed the gate into a military outpost overseeing the route between Hue and Da Nang.
  • After 1954: American forces and the South Vietnamese government further reinforced these military structures.

During the wars against the French and Americans, the battlegrounds of Hai Van Pass and Hai Van Gate witnessed the bravery of Vietnamese soldiers and people. Major attacks occurred here in 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1968. Over time, the site suffered extensive damage from the wars and weather. The outer walls and main entrance were largely destroyed, leaving behind only the moss-covered watchtower and archway. Many bunkers and fortifications lay in ruins, obscured by thick vegetation. In early 2024, restoration efforts were completed, revitalizing the site with a more impressive and well-maintained appearance.

3. Unique architecture of Hai Van Gate

Hai Van Gate used to impress with its commanding design: solid walls nearly 6 meters high, a large arched entrance, and an upper level with observation windows. The facade facing Hue bears the inscription "Hai Van Quan" (Hai Van Gate), while the opposite facade reads "Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan" ("The World's Most Majestic Gate").

In late 2021, the authorities from Hue and Da Nang jointly allocated VND 42 billion to restore the deteriorating site. The restoration was completed in early 2024, faithfully preserving the original architecture. Restored sections include:

  • Main entrance: Carefully rebuilt with bricks and surrounded by stone walls. The arched entrance, solid pillars, and intricate carvings replicate the original, with the name “Hai Van Quan” engraved in Han script.
  • Guard house: Located near the main entrance, this building served as living quarters for stationed soldiers. It was reconstructed based on archaeological remains and historical photos.
  • Armory: Adjacent to the guard house, the armory stored imperial weaponry. It was rebuilt with traditional materials - curved tiled roofs, stone foundations, and wooden columns.
  • Fortifications: Strategically placed fortifications around the gate have been rebuilt, showcasing the sophisticated military layout of the past.
  • Other structures: Additional elements such as stone walls, drainage ditches, earthen embankments, watchtowers, parapets, and side entrances were also meticulously restored. Notably, the rear entrance, known as "Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan," was reconstructed. It led to the highest observation post, highlighting ancient moss-covered stonework. Additionally, five bunkers have been preserved and reinforced to maintain their historical value.
