Cua Bac Church

1. Where is Cua Bac Church? How to get there?

Cua Bac Church is a significant Catholic church located at 56 Phan Dinh Phung Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. Its name, which translates to "Northern Gate Church," is derived from its proximity to the Northern Gate of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long.

Cua Bac Church is easily accessible via various means of transport, including buses, personal vehicles, and taxis. If you opt for the bus, you can take route 18 or route 23, which have stops near the church, with a fare of 7,000 VND.

If you have rented a motorbike and are departing from Hoan Kiem Lake, make your way to Trang Thi Street. Follow Trang Thi Street onto Dien Bien Phu Street, then turn right onto Hoang Dieu Street, where the imperial citadel is located. Continue past the citadel and you will see Cua Bac Church at the intersection between Hoang Dieu Street and Phan Dinh Phung Street.

2. What to know about Cua Bac Church?

2.1. The long-established history

Built between 1925 and 1930 under the administration of Bishop Pierre Marie Gendreau and the supervision of Father Joseph-Antoine Dépaulis, Cua Bac Church is a remarkable testament to Hanoi's religious heritage. Initially intended to be named the Church of the Vietnamese Martyrs, it was renamed Church of Our Lady of the Martyrs as the Vietnamese martyrs had only been beatified at the time. The church honors the six martyrs in Hanoi, including Father Théophane Vénard who was martyred outside the Northern Gate in 1861.

2.2. The unique architecture

Cua Bac Church is renowned for its unique architectural blend that harmoniously combines Eastern and Western design elements. This church features a large rectangular space divided into a reception area and a mass area. The right side houses altars for God and saints, while the left contains the vestry. The interior is entirely constructed and decorated in the design of European churches.

Designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard, Cua Bac Church boasts an asymmetrical layout with a prominent bell tower, making it unique among typically symmetrical Catholic structures in Vietnam. The roof extends from the bell tower through the dome to other areas, reminiscent of traditional Vietnamese communal houses.

The system of windows and ventilation openings is designed with Thai-style eaves to shield the interior from the sun and prevent the rain from leaking in, except for large decorative windows which are fitted with light-filtering glass. The extensive use of greenery also makes the landscape more inviting and close to nature.

2.3. The cultural significance

Cua Bac Church in Hanoi is not only one of the most beautiful churches in Hanoi but also a favorite spot for celebrating Christmas in Hanoi. In recent years, the Goethe Institute and the German Embassy chose this church to host cultural activities for Christmas, such as symphony concerts of Christmas songs and Christmas markets offering a variety of goods.
