Su Muon Pagoda was built around the 1930s. Initially, the pagoda was relatively small, built mainly of leaves and wood. At that time, the pagoda's abbot was Gia Minh. Once a businessman, after practicing and spreading Buddhism on many islands such as Hon Thom and Tho Chu, he decided to settle on Phu Quoc Island and built the pagoda.
By 1945, with the war reaching its climax, Su Muon Pagoda was almost completely burned down. In 1955, the monk Minh Uc came here and rebuilt the pagoda. Nearly 40 years later, it underwent a major restoration that lasted more than 2 years. Now, the pagoda’s name Su Muon is still preserved to commemorate the merits of Gia Minh, the monk who founded the pagoda.
