Hong An Pagoda, Bac Ninh: A landmark of culture & tradition

25/08/2025 2.001

Hong An Pagoda is more than just another Buddhist temple in northern Vietnam - it is the soul of Lim Mountain, a place where history, faith, and the artistry of Bac Ninh’s heritage meet. Known for its majestic architecture and centuries-old legacy, this sacred site draws thousands of pilgrims and visitors every spring, especially during the famous Lim Festival.

1. Where is Hong An Pagoda? How to get there?

Perched on the slopes of Lim Mountain, Hong An Pagoda rests at the heart of Tien Du Commune in Bac Ninh Province. Once part of the historic Lim Town, it is now one of the most renowned religious sites in northern Vietnam.

For centuries, this temple has been the spiritual home of the Noi Due community, where Buddhism blends harmoniously with the worship of national heroes. Visitors will find altars dedicated not only to the Buddha but also to figures such as Tran Hung Dao, Pham Ngu Lao, Nguyen Dinh Dien, Do Nguyen Thuy, and Bo De Ni.

If you are departing from Hanoi, reaching Hong An Pagoda is straightforward: a 40-minute drive via Nguyen Van Cu Street, which will take you straight to the foot of Lim Mountain.

2. When was Hong An Pagoda built?

Historical records and surviving relics tell us that Hong An Pagoda was expanded on a grand scale during the 15th century. A poem titled "Climbing to Hong An Pagoda" by Nguyen Thien Tich, a mandarin and scholar, described the site as already boasting imposing halls, exquisite statues, and decorated altars at that time.

The 18th century brought another wave of renewal. In 1769, under the reign of King Canh Hung, general Nguyen Dinh Dien and nun Bo De Ni spearheaded a major restoration. They not only repaired aging structures but also expanded the complex, ensuring the pagoda’s prominence as a center of worship for the land.

3. Ancient architecture of Hong An Pagoda in Bac Ninh

Entering Hong An Pagoda is like stepping into a living piece of Vietnamese history. The journey begins at the triple-arch gate, which was rebuilt in 2012 with twin bell towers and layered roofs crowned by a lotus figure. Passing through the gate, visitors will leave behind the noise of daily life and enter a world of stillness, punctuated by the chime of temple bells.

At the heart of the complex lies Tam Bao Hall, which was built in the traditional “Dinh” (丁) shape. The Front Hall flows naturally into the Upper Hall, creating a sense of gradual spiritual ascent. On the left, a nine-bay corridor with simple trusses reflects the restrained elegance of rural Buddhist architecture. Around are shrines and memorial houses dedicated to figures such as Duc Thanh Tran and Bo De Ni. Mu A Tower, weathered by centuries, stands quietly among the trees, adding to the temple’s timeless atmosphere.

Inside, the pagoda preserves invaluable relics: the bronze bell Hong An Tu Chung from 1795, sixteen imperial decrees, carved steles, and an impressive array of Buddha statues. These are not just artifacts but symbols of the deep connection between faith, artistry, and history that defines Bac Ninh’s heritage.

The festival overflows with processions, traditional games like human chess, swing contests, and weaving competitions.
