1. A glance at Hoang Lien National Park
Hoang Lien National Park is in Northern Vietnam. It stretches across high mountains between 1,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level, covering parts of Sapa in Lao Cai Province and parts of Tan Uyen District in Lai Chau Province.
Before becoming a national park in 2002, this area was already protected as Hoang Lien - Sapa Nature Reserve since 1996. The upgrade to national park status came from a decision by the Prime Minister, aiming to better conserve the area's rich biodiversity.

Hoang Lien National Park spans nearly 30,000 hectares and is divided into three zones: a strictly protected zone, a zone focused on ecological restoration, and a zone for tourism and park management. There is also a large buffer area of more than 38,000 hectares that connects with nearby communities.
Located along Hoang Lien Son Mountain, this park is known for its stunning landscapes, diverse plant and animal life, and cool weather. In 2004, it was recognized as one of Vietnam’s ASEAN Heritage Parks. It was also ranked among the country’s most biodiverse spots by the Global Environment Facility.

Hoang Lien National Park is home to nearly 2,850 species of vascular plants, many of which are rare and listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book. Among the most endangered are three special tree species: the green cypress, the red pine, and the Fansipan fir. These trees are considered critically endangered and have been highlighted by WWF and other conservation groups for urgent protection.
Unique varieties like the jellyfish orchid and thick-lipped orchid thrive in this mountain environment. Visitors will also find about 20 different types of rhododendrons, making it a paradise for plant enthusiasts. In addition, the park is rich in medicinal plants, with nearly 800 species already recorded. For those interested in botany, exploring the flora of Hoang Lien National Park is a must.

2.2. Learn about the rich fauna
Hoang Lien National Park is not only rich in plant life but also full of fascinating animals. Scientists have identified a total of 555 land vertebrate species here. This includes 96 mammals, 346 birds, 63 reptiles, and 50 amphibians. One of the standout discoveries is the rare spiny frog, found only recently.
Bird lovers will be excited to know that the park is home to five bird species found only in Vietnam and 55 others that are unique to Hoang Lien Son Mountain. Many of these animals are endangered, with 60 species listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book and 33 more included on the global IUCN Red List.
In addition, Hoang Lien National Park is the only place in Vietnam where over 300 butterfly species have been recorded, including many that have not been found in other parts of the country. These butterflies not only have scientific value; they also add to the park’s appeal as a tourist destination.
2.3. Trek to Fansipan Mountain
If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure, trekking to Fansipan Mountain, the highest peak in Vietnam, is a must. There are several Fansipan trekking tours, each offering a unique view of the region’s natural beauty. The most popular tour starts from Tram Ton Pass. This route is around 10.5 kilometers long and typically takes one or two days, depending on your pace. For more of a challenge, trekkers can begin their journey from Sin Chai Village or Cat Cat Village. These routes are longer and steeper, often planned over three days and two nights.

2.4. Admire Golden Stream & Love Waterfall
Deep within Hoang Lien National Park, near O Quy Ho Pass, you will find the peaceful Golden Stream and Love Waterfall. Love Waterfall flows from a height of around 100 meters down from Hoang Lien Son Mountain into the clear, shallow waters of Golden Stream. This stream is named for the yellow pebbles lining its bed, which glimmer under the sun. The journey takes you through bamboo groves and rhododendron flowers that bloom in shades of red, white, and yellow. The paths include stone steps and natural red-earth tracks, with the gentle sounds of flowing waters and singing birds along the way.
2.5. Conquer Nam Kang Ho Tao Peak
Nam Kang Ho Tao Peak stands tall at 2,881 meters on the border between Lao Cai and Lai Chau. It is known as one of the most difficult climbs in northwestern Vietnam, with steep cliffs, slippery rocks, and several fast-moving streams along the way. The trail is remote and rugged, winding through untouched forests, thick moss-covered rhododendron trees, and striking waterfalls, including the impressive Bay Falls.
Most treks to the peak take about three days and two nights. The first day covers roughly 12 kilometers, leading to the first campsite. The hardest part of the climb lies within the last 5 kilometers, where hikers must scale sharp, nearly vertical rock faces near the summit. As you ascend, the landscape shifts from dense, green forests at the base to misty, ancient groves higher up, creating a mystical atmosphere.

2.6. See Vung Rong Waterfall & Fairy Well
Vung Rong Waterfall is located along a scenic trail that begins in Cat Cat Village and follows Muong Hoa Stream for about 8 kilometers. At the base of Hoang Lien Son Mountain, the waterfall flows into a clear pool surrounded by rock formations. It is a quiet spot surrounded by lush greenery, perfect for a peaceful rest during your hike.
A short walk upstream leads to Fairy Well, a deep pool fed by two gentle waterfalls. The calm water and shaded surroundings create a magical setting here. According to local legend, this was once a place where heavenly maidens came down to bathe, giving the site its name. It is ideal for a short escape in the heart of Hoang Lien National Park.
2.7. Drop by nearby ethnic villages
To immerse yourself in the local culture in Hoang Lien National Park, you can visit several ethnic villages nestled in Muong Hoa Valley, including Cat Cat Village, Ta Phin Village, Ta Van Village, and Lao Chai Village. You can explore these villages on foot or by bicycle in a day via guided or solo trekking.
